High school students preparing for college will have to face the nerve racking SAT I writing section. The writing portion of the SAT I test is a 60 minute test that includes an essay writing and a multiple-choice section.

Whether you are looking to obtain an ivy league education or pursue one of the many online education degrees, the scores you get on the writing portion of the SAT I test can determine your future. Here are some tips you can use to help make the writing portion of the SATs a little easier.

Outline Your Writing

Many SAT test takers make the mistake of jumping into the essay portion of the test without outlining their thoughts. This can result in an essay that doesn’t flow or strays off topic.

If you are looking to write a great essay, make sure you take the added time to outline your essay and plan what you are going to write. This will help you create an essay that flows and reads well.

Stay on Topic

While it might be tempting to stray off topic during your essay, it will not help your SAT scores. You will be given one topic to write about. Make sure you stay on topic and only write about the given topic.

Don’t Go For Perfection

The SAT writing section assesses your writing ability but it does not look for perfection. While writing your essay keep this in mind and don’t try to achieve perfection. Instead, focus on writing a clear essay that conveys your thoughts in an organized fashion.

Using these tips will help reduce your stress and help you get a good score on your writing SAT section.

Writing a college level essay for the first time isn’t always easy for any college freshman. The main key to writing a great college level essay is by writing a strong outline. The outline is what’s going to help guide you through your essay.

Writing essays is important because they are a big part of your online Bachelors programs. Your outline is going to show the entire breakdown of the topic your essay is about.

Before you start writing choose the topic you wish to write about. Make sure the topic falls under one of your options given to you by your professor.

Stay Focused on the Topic

Think about the question you’re answering in your essay and focus on that only. Students will go off on a tangent pretty quickly and easily so it’s important to stay focus on the question you’re looking to answer.

Organize your Ideas

When writing your outline, write down all the ideas for the topic. Choose the ideas that are general and use those as your headlines. Once you’ve got the headlines write down specific ideas for each section of the paper.

The format will remain constant throughout the outline. If you start with capital letters then use capital letters throughout the outline.

Write your Thesis & Headlines

Your thesis statement is the hardest part to write so do that first. The thesis is at the beginning of your outline. The thesis explains your reasoning for the paper.

The headlines are a short sentence and will argue each point that you’re making in the paper. Your subheads are going to fully support the arguments in each headline.

Many people struggle with writing. Despite the fact that many of us are writing each and every day, whether an email, Facebook status update, or a blog post, many don’t know the basic rules of grammar. Although for the most part this isn’t a big deal, for some it can important to impress your boss, look professional to clients, and come across as intelligent to those you do business with.

So how can you go about improving your grammar? One of the best ways is to take a college course on writing. Whether you’re working on an online college degree or not, taking an online college writing class is a great way to brush up your writing skills including reminding yourself of the grammar rules.

If you don’t have time to take a class on writing, there are a lot of grammar books that are used for such classes that you could read to remind yourself of these rules. If you’re looking for something more in-depth, check out Webster’s English Usage. Just like the dictionary, a book of how words are used in English is republished every few years. It includes things like when to use if and when to use whether and includes history of the item and why the usage is what it is.

The important thing when it comes to writing is to not slack just because what you’re writing is “unimportant.” Whether it’s an email to a friend or an entry in your personal blog, be sure to practice good grammar so it becomes habit.

When taking writing-related online courses or preparing for the writing section of a standardized test, rudimentary writing skills are being developed. In a world where emailing, tweeting and conducting more and more tasks online is becoming prevalent, the ability to express oneself in writing is essential.

What Employers Want

The qualities that employers look for in applicants vary depending on the industry. However, some commonalities do exist across employers and their hiring needs. Solid communication skills are a common requirement in many work environments. Whether you gain these skills through online courses, on the job or in a classroom, employers need workers who can read, write and speak clearly.

The Soft Skills Aspect of Writing

Much of learning how to write well involves learning basic grammar and sentence structure concepts. Beyond this, a skilled writer is careful about the message he or she communicates in a note, email or company message board. The length, tone and word choices of the message are all important aspects of effective communication. A message that is too short or too long or uses words that offend, confuse or belittle others can make it difficult for an employee to establish positive relationships in the workplace.

Becoming a Better Writer

Communicating well in writing at work requires commitment and focus. There may be days when a person is feeling frustrated or overwhelmed. On these days, especially, it’s important to be extra careful when communicating with others in writing. Saving an email to the draft folder may be best on these days until it’s clear that the email must be sent.

The SATs have long been used by college admittance committees in choosing the right students for their school. Many high school students take them seriously — taking practice tests, going through prep courses, and using flashcards to help them remember concepts and vocabulary. Still, many students don’t seem to understand how important it is to get a good score.

When it comes to applying for college, a good SAT score can help make your application stand out, along with good grades, a well-written essay, and a demonstration of involvement in the community. It’s one important piece to the larger puzzle of college applications.

But what are students to do if they don’t get a good enough score? Many students take the SAT during their junior year of high school. This allows time for the students to retake the test before applying for schools if they don’t get the score they wanted. Statistically, students do better the second time they take the test. For students that don’t have this option, a really good alternative is to look into online college degree programs. This would allow the student to take classes online and if he or she would like to transfer to a college later, the school will look at grades received rather than the SAT score.

Remember, if you aren’t able to start at the school of your choice, all is not lost. Colleges and universities take transfer students each year and you could be one of them just by proving that you can get the grades needed.

Grammar is a loathsome subject — the stumbles of words and their meanings, the incomprehensible tenses. There is, you’re certain, no value to gain in mastering the English language. It’s a subject you hate: demanding time, effort and patience (a trait which you’ve never fully embraced). A degree therefore seems useless. You’d rather pursue other interests, taking only the necessary literature credits and then forgetting everything you’ve learned.

This is not wise, however — if only because online education degrees in English can generate success for other ventures.

Language isn’t simply a tribute to poetry and indecipherable prose. Instead it offers rewards (such as comprehension, analysis, creativity and more) that can be applied to other fields. Choosing to study English ensures that students gain the ability to read — and dissect — any form of text. And this is imperative for all careers… no matter how far removed from books they seem.

It’s estimated that over 50 percent of pre-law students select English as their secondary degrees. Those seeking medical fields choose literature over all other minors (with 60 percent using it for foundational courses). Such hard sciences seem incompatible with grammar; and yet they are perpetual favorites. The reason is obvious — because writing inspires dynamic thinking, offering ways to draft theses from unique perspectives and ensuring that students gain recognition. It allows for stronger technical perspectives, as well as helping complex ideas to be conquered: simply because students are given the tools to decipher prose.

English is not simply a degree for the poetic. It’s instead a cornerstone for all other elements and should be embraced.

These are two words students fear hearing most: writing assignment. The dreaded school paper. Unlike a multiple-choice test, a school paper doesn’t have one right answer. Instead, a student must clearly, and sometimes eloquently, present an argument with supportive details over the span of two to five pages, and sometimes more. And if that’s not hard enough, the paper must have proper punctuation and grammar, and no misspellings. However, the tips below will help make the next writing assignment — be it a one-pager for middles school or a 20-pager for online Bachelors programs — flawless.

Build an outline first

Before writing the first sentence map out the paper by outlining the introduction and conclusion as well as each main point that will be discussed in the body. Once the major topics are figured out, the rest of the details become easier to fill in. In contrast, writing blindly increases the chances of going off topic and writing run-on sentences.

Rewrite, rewrite, rewrite

Even the best writers in history — from Dickens to Hemingway — constantly revised their work. Going through several drafts of a school paper weeds out the weak areas, making the overall paper much stronger.

Find a writing spot

Writing takes a lot of concentration, as well as creativity. That’s why it’s important to find somewhere that is secluded but can get the creative juices flowing, either indoors or outdoors.

Undergo peer criticism

No one should proofread their own work. Instead, every writing assignment should be proofed by a classmate who can point out the flaws and make suggestions

If you have a specific career goal in mind, then one of the best things that you can do is make a plan to attend college. When you attend college and obtain a college degree, the result is often that your resume is taken more seriously and you are able to land the jobs that you seek more easily.

Preparing For Your Degree

Once you know what type of degree you are going to need to obtain in order to take on your chosen career path, the next step in the process for you is going to be to figure out how you need to get there. There are going to be specific courses that you will need to take in order to obtain your degree. There are also different types of degrees including offline and online education degrees, and they both offer a completely different experience so make sure that you consider both.

Once you know what courses are required of you, you can put together an education plan. Your education plan is going to tell you what to take and when, because once you have a plan you simply have to work through your course load until you have the grades you want to get your degree. Getting good grades is essential, because your GPA is going to look excellent on your resume when you are talking about the degree that you have obtained. Keep in mind that you are going to get out of college everything that you put in, so give it your all.

When students are faced with taking tests such as the ACT, SAt or FCAT, it takes a steady plan of studying and practice to prepare. This is especially true for the English and writing sections, which are challenging for some students.

These tests are often required to study for many traditional and online education degrees. Students should studying early, especially with texts that are geared specifically for each test. These books will include a pre-test, practice problems and actual practice tests to help the student prepare. The pre-test is especially useful for finding out what weak areas need to be focused on the most.

The student will need to build a strong vocabulary, which is important on the English section. It is also imperative that they review basic grammar concepts and learn how to efficiently edit their work to save time. This is important on the test as each section is timed. Students should practice writing from prompts, carefully reading directions for each section and make sure that their writing is neat. These small factors can have a big influence on their final score for that section.

When planning how to study, the student should set up a certain time each day to work. They should concentrate on weak areas in grammar and spelling, but also practice on areas they do well in. Giving enough time to both ensures that the student will be adequately prepared for challenge ahead. With careful preparation and concentrated study, these students will have the best chance for success.

Although college is designed to help you with a whole lot of learning, there are some basic skills that you are going to want to have before you start school for the first time. One of these skills is writing, which is why there is a writing section on the SAT, and why many colleges require you to take an English placement exam prior to signing up for your classes.

Learning to Write for College

One of the best things that you can do is to learn how to write for college. When you are in college you are going to be expected to have a basic understanding of grammar and spelling, and you are going to need to know how to write a paper and how to organize your thinking through things like brainstorming and outlining. If you do not have these basic skills under your belt yet, then one of the best things that you can do is to take some online courses, which will help you develop a better understanding of English and writing.

Online courses and seminars are going to help you develop a better understanding of how writing for college works. Once you know what is expected of you as a college student, then you can develop the right education accordingly. Knowing how to write in college is going to help you be able to excel in your courses, since you will not be taught to write but instead will be expected to already be capable of writing.

Whether you are pursuing an online college degree or trying to make good grades in a high school English composition class, procrastination can be a problem. Writer’s block can strike even the best writers in the world, so the key is to learn how to deal with the problem when it arises.

Identify the Pressures Involved in Writing Papers

People procrastinate for a variety of reasons. Fear of a bad grade or the unpleasantness of the task may be possible reasons for putting off writing a paper. The fact remains, however, that an online college degree, a high school diploma and other academic accomplishments require that papers be written. To deal with this pressure, identify the core issue. It may be that your ideas for the paper haven’t crystallized or that you don’t feel secure about your writing skills.

Face the Challenge

Once you’ve identified the reasons behind the procrastination, focus on solutions for each problem. People sometimes procrastinate becomes a task seems too overwhelming and large. Break down the task into smaller pieces. If the topic of your paper is complicated, make an outline and tackle one subtopic at a time. If you are struggling with how to organize the paper, speak to your professor for guidance or look up an essay writing resource.

Reward Yourself

After you’ve tackled each small challenge, reward yourself. Your reward may be a fresh cup of coffee before you sit down to work again. You might watch 20 minutes of your favorite television show after writing a few pages. Be sure to return to work after each small break or reward. Before you know it, your paper will be finished.

Any high school student preparing for college knows, and dreads, the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT). These scores are an important part in getting into college, even if you’re getting an online college degree. The exam, which lasts about three hours, will measure your skills in writing, math and verbal.

The vocabulary is where many people get a little nervous. Here are some tips for preparing for the vocabulary section of the SATs.

Practice Makes Perfect

Most schools will offer students the chance to take a practice test for the SATs. If your school doesn’t offer them there are several free websites that will let you take a practice test. The test will let you see where your strengths and weaknesses are.

Take a Prep Course

The SAT prep class is going to help prepare you for the SATs and even help give you a great score. The teacher will give you a large list of the most popular vocabulary words that will more than likely end up on the test.

Learn the Components

By memorizing all the prefixes, suffixes and roots will help increase your vocabulary score. This will be more beneficial on the multiple choice questions since it’s giving you another way of answering questions known as the ever popular process of elimination.

Make Study Aids

This might sound elementary, but flash cards have always been the best way to study a ton of vocabulary words. Once you’ve made them and studied a little, ask a friend or family member to test you. It’s the only real way to see if you’ve learned the vocabulary words.

There are many aspects and considerations that go into applying for a job. From deciding whether the job is something you want to do for an extended period, to the compensation offered by the employer, there are many things to consider before deciding to apply. This fact is a reality on the other side of the spectrum as well; in that the employer has many things to consider before choosing to hire an applicant. Among some of the more common criteria are: experience, first impression and of course, education. While these elements are all important to an employer in determining whether an applicant is worth hiring, education is among one of the most important. Below are a couple of reasons why an educational background can make you more appealing to a potential employer.

Proves You Have Knowledge of a Subject

Aside from on the job experience, education proves that a potential employee has knowledge about the position that they are applying for. While not all degrees reinforce a particular job completely, they still prove that a person has an educational background. Unfortunately, many people neglect obtaining a degree and tend to wonder why they rarely get hired for positions with a lot of competition.

Shows You Are Reliable

A degree is a good sign to an employer that an applicant is reliable. They understand that going through online Bachelors programs, or on site programs is not an easy task, and by completing them it is proof that you are willing to follow a project through to completion.

Being educated involves a lot more than just being knowledgeable. To be an educated person you need to go far beyond just having a head full of facts and figures. While having this information is a good start toward being educated, it’s far from the entire point of it all. As GI Joe would saying, knowing is only half the battle.

You need to develop and use your critical thinking skills in order to become a truly educated person. One way you can do this is through going to classes and interacting with your fellow students. However, sometimes the distractions of a real world college environment become too much of a distraction, which ultimately hurts your education. In a case like that, you should consider going to school online. When you get an online college degree, it shows that you have the necessary discipline to continue your education even when there is no one else around to encourage you.

A truly educated person is not out to impress others with it. With education you grow into no longer needing to impress anyone else. You grow into wanting to grow for your own purposes and expand your knowledge because it’s enjoyable to do so. One benefit to this growth is that you no longer have to worry about having “a job” because you can use the knowledge you so passionately expand upon to grow into a career you love. Knowledge is great, but genuine education requires you to really grow as a person.

Doing well on the ACTs is important and can help you get into a good college. Whether you’re planning on attending a community college, university, or getting an online college degree, taking the ACTs is a good idea. The writing portion of the ACTs is optional, but some colleges require that you take this part of the test. Here are some tips to help you do well on the ACT writing portion.

Research Examples

Before your text date, go online or use ACT prep guide books to research writing tips and examples. These will give you an idea of what types of subjects you will be writing about and show you sample pieces of other students’ writing exams. They also give you a score and reasoning as to why that student received that rating.

Don’t Rush

When you take the test, it is important that you don’t rush yourself to avoid sloppy and poorly thought out content. You have plenty of time to write. It is important that you take your time in order to do your best.

Prewrite

Begin by writing an outline. This will help you organize your paper well and establish a well-rounded and thought out piece. You should have a good idea of what you want to say before you start writing so that you aren’t constantly erasing and revising your final draft. The test center should supply a scratch piece of paper, so you can write out a rough-draft before you complete your piece.

Edit and Review

After you have completed the writing exam, make sure to reread through it. Failing to review your piece may cost you. If you have extra time, look over what you have written several times because you don’t always find mistakes the first time.

Earning a college degree is now easier than every. Improvements in both technology and teaching techniques have helped to create a new breed of college classes. Earning an online college degree is an excellent way to complete your education while working or when traditional college classes will not suffice. It is interesting to consider how the increased popularity of online classes has changed the way students write papers as they pursue their degrees.

The process of obtaining an online college degree has inherently changed the critical thinking skills of all students. As more and more people are turning to online classes, we see a growing reliance on technology growing reliance on technology. For example, students must increase their ability to self-manage. Consider a typical college paper. No longer must papers be researched in libraries and printed on paper. Instead, students are learning to use online research sources and books. Students send papers and other required writing assignments electronically. This has created a shift in the education trend across the globe.

Educators teach students to rely on technology in their pursuit of an online college degree. When we once again consider typical college papers, students use built-in language and grammar programs to aid them with the writing process. We will have to see whether this aspect of online learing is positive.

The changes caused by a move towards more electronic learning has made college degrees accessible to a greater number of people. Our education system will benefit from continued investments in this area of technology.

When preparing to take the SAT exam you will need to plan for the writing section. Looking up sample essays, essay writing techniques, and doing some practice essays ahead of time can help you be fully prepared to do well in this section of the exam. Practice essays and information can be found on the official websites for each exam type.

Following a format when writing your essays will ensure that you will have the confidence you need to complete your writing assignment in the time frame given, it will ensure that you will cover the topic completely, and it will give you a sense of structure to your essay.

In the SAT writing exam you may be asked to write a one-example essay or a two-example essay. When writing a one-example essay, choose a subject that you have personal experience with. This subject should be real and not invented. It is easier to write about something you have personal experience with. It is best to steer away from controversial subjects, religion, or politics.

In your one-example essay your first paragraph will introduce your “example” and should create interest in the subject. This paragraph can be general but must include a thesis statement and direct the reader to the general idea of your essay. In the second paragraph you will cover about half of your “example” by describing the situation. The third paragraph should include more specifics and complete information pertaining to your “example.” The fourth paragraph of your essay is where you will discuss the conclusions or moral lessons that your “example” shows and tie them into your thesis statement. In your final paragraph you will be concluding your essay. If possible you should relate your final conclusions to information in your introductory paragraph to round out your essay. Use some online colleges to look for effective tips on writing section of SAT Exam

A narrative essay tells a story. Successful narrative essays always have a point. When you are writing a narrative essay you should try to display the author’s values while expressing them in story format. The author may be remembering a significant event or time in his life or may even be observing events in the present. If you do not feel that you have adequate experience to build from, use an experience from someone you know or even write about your favorite sport or hobby. Once you have the general idea, you are ready to begin.

The story should begin with an introduction to the main idea of the story. At the conclusion of the story the author should make a point. Include anecdotes throughout the story. The author should describe the person, scene, or events that are happening in detail. You may add dialogue so long as it is punctuated correctly and not overdone.

The events and people in your story should be described in such a way that readers can identify with them. If your story includes a moral struggle, include the feelings of the internal struggle your character may be facing. What did your character learn from this struggle? Remember to have a point to the story and find a way to get this message across to your readers.

The point of view in a narrative essay is usually first person. You should use “I” which invites your readers to be included in an intimate discussion between the character and the reader.

Classical education is dependent on a three part process of training the mind. In the early years of education you spend your time absorbing facts. In your middle years of education you were taught to think through arguments. In high school you were then taught to express yourself.
In your first several years of schooling the building blocks for all other future education was being laid. A young child’s mind is like a sponge, ready to absorb every bit of information that is given to them. It is fun to memorize facts and learn new things. This stage of learning is considered the “grammar” stage because it is where you have been given all of the basic information and facts to build from in later years.
By fifth grade you begin to have more analytical thoughts. At this stage in the learning process you are more interested in knowing why things are and why they happen than in learning factual information. Now you are paying more attention to cause and effect and way that facts actually fit together in a logical way. This stage of learning is referred to as the “logical stage.” During this stage is when children begin to learn and understand subjects such as algebra and begin to apply logic in all academic areas.
The final stage of classical education is the “rhetoric stage” which builds off the first two stages. By this point, high school students are learning to think and write original works. They are learning to take the information they have learned during the logical stage and apply it to the factual information they learned during the grammar stage of development and present clear, forceful, insightful conclusions to problems.

Some teachers feel that they have to spend a considerable amount of time teaching their students proper grammar usage and mechanics. However, studies have shown that you can actually spend too much time and focus on grammar, which in turn can have a negative effect on a child’s understanding of proper grammar. Rather, short focused lessons may be more effective.

Students tend to see grammar, punctuation, and writing lessons as confusing, overwhelming, or just plain boring. It may be beneficial to find more interesting ways to incorporate grammar lessons into other subjects and/or use games and interactive lessons to help teach grammar and mechanics lessons. Allow students to correct their own work with a checklist. This allows the student to see where the mistakes are and find ways to improve their writing skills.

There are many student websites and teacher help sites that can provide you with great interactive lessons, worksheets, and games to make learning grammar and proper mechanics more interesting and easier to understand. For example, you could use a common game such as Scattegories to teach the proper use of nouns. Choose a letter and have each child in turn come up with a noun that starts with that letter for each category of nouns (people, places, visible things, qualities, ideas, actions, and conditions). Each word can only used once. This keeps children thinking and finding new words that fit into the categories they are given. Before they know it, your students will be learning what nouns are and how they fit into specific categories!

Teaching your child proper English grammar can sometimes seem like an overwhelming task. With all of the language slangs and improper usages that children can be bombarded with through peer interactions, television, and even reading materials it is no wonder the English language becomes so confusing. Although teaching the specifics of grammar structure falls to the school teachers, giving your child a strong base at home before he even enters the educational world can ensure your child’s overall success.

Begin by ensuring that you are using proper grammar all of the time in speaking and writing. Children learn best by example and will internally develop many grammar rules through continued exposure to the proper use of the language. When your child is young, read to him daily. Teach your children to read early and encourage him to read often. Children who read a lot and read well will also write and speak well.

Engage your child in fun learning activities while they are young. There are many great activities, worksheets, and games available online to help you teach your preschooler proper grammar and word usage. Teaching and encouraging your child when he is young will ensure that he retains this information when he is older.

In fact, it is important that you do not talk down to your child or use “baby phrases” while your child is developing his speech. If you have engaged in the proper use of the English language throughout your child’s speech development years, your child will learn to speak and use proper grammar much quicker than if he has to re-learn from previous improper “lessons.” As your child matures continue to encourage proper use of grammar in your child’s speech and writing.

If you have a degree in English, teaching is not the only option you have. There are many career options for English majors including writing, publishing, editing, business communications, and teaching. Having an English major on your resume can actually be one of the most marketable tools you have. Due to the fact that the English major teaches many basic skills, employers tend to seek out those with a degree in English.

The most obvious career choice for an English major tends to be teaching. If this is the career path you choose, with the proper teaching certification the jobs for individuals with a degree in English are plentiful. Depending on the level of your English degree and certification you can teach at an elementary or secondary school level with a Bachelor’s degree. If you have a Master’s degree or higher in English you may consider teaching at a local community college or university.

Writing, journalism, editing, and publishing are other career areas that English majors tend to gravitate towards. In fact, according to a CNN report, the ‘traditional’ career option for an individual with an English major is in the area of writing. You may not be interested in writing a book or becoming a novelist, but may find enjoyment in working for a newspaper or magazine company. If you wish to pursue a career in publishing, however, you may need some additional training in learning publishing software for your hp laptops.

Because the English major teaches so many basic skills, employers in the business world are seeking out those with a degree in English. This is because businesses feel that individuals with a degree in English are well-equipped to communicate in the business world. Since business executives spend over 80 percent of their time involved in written or oral communication, it seems to be the perfect career for an English major!

There is no reason why your education should ever stop. Aren’t we supposed to be learning something new every day? If you’ve graduated with a college degree then you’re already aware of the benefits of a higher education. More career opportunities are opened for you. There is a greater chance of advancement. Most importantly you can earn a higher salary. So the question becomes why stop at just one degree? Why not go for that MBA or PhD?

If you decide to pursue that higher degree, the first step you’ll want to take is to find the university of your choice. What’s great is that many accredited colleges offer MBA programs online. This means you can continue your education without sacrificing your current career track. It also means you can continue your education at your own pace. Get that MBA as quick or as slow as you want.

Once you’ve settled on the institution, you’ll go through the application process. Part of that is turning in your GMAT scores. The Graduate Management Assessment Test is an exam every MBA candidate must take. The GMAT scores helps universities determine your level of education. We all learn with different methods, but as we move into higher education we need to be on the same page.

Fortunately, there is an amazing GMAT prep course available online to help you get ready for the test. This course puts you right into a virtual classroom environment and provides all kinds of tips and tactics to help you pass the exam. There are sample questions to work through and even an online instructor who can answer any questions. The GMAT is a test given by computer so it makes sense to get prepared by computer as well! If you’re ready to expand your horizons with further education then get yourself ready for the GMAT.

If you love the English language, literature, grammar, and writing a career as an English teacher might be perfect for you. But, instead of just becoming an English teacher in the United States, have you considered teaching English in another country or taking any online classes? English teachers are in great demand in other countries as well as elementary and college English teachers in the United States. The steps to take to become an English teacher include the following:

Before investing in the schooling required to become an English teacher talk to English teachers at the educational level you would wish to teach. In fact, you may consider talking to teachers from differing grade levels. If they will allow you to, visit their classroom and observe. This can help you to determine if this is he right career path for you.

Obtain a Bachelor’s degree in English education if you plan to teach at the elementary level. Some teaching positions require a higher degree, although a Bachelor’s degree will be the lowest level required. If you already have a Bachelor’s degree in another subject, you may just need to pass a subject area test in order to teach English. However, if you are more interested in teaching at the college level, you will most likely need a Master’s degree in English, although some colleges may even require a Ph.D.

Check with your state for licensing requirements to obtain a teaching license. Each state has specific requirements for teaching. If you initially receive your teaching license in one state but wish to teach in a different state, you may need to take additional classes, test out of your subject, or meet some other requirements. Dependent on the requirements of the state in which you wish to teach, you may find it necessary or advisable to enroll in a teacher preparation program.

Writing research papers is a necessary part of the academic process. You can write an excellent research paper by following a few simple steps. First and foremost is your attitude. To be able to write well, you need to have a positive attitude about what you are writing about.
Choose a subject that interests you then narrow it down to one subject area. You are more likely to write a good paper if the subject interests you. Get approval from your instructor before diving into your research. Now it is time to start gathering information. Use internet search engines for a starting point and to give you direction. Ensure that you are only gathering information from reputable sites such as educational, government, or official organizational websites.
Some good written resources include almanacs, encyclopedias, atlases, dictionaries, government publications, guides, reports, magazines, newspapers. Many of these sources can be accessed online also. You may also be able to contact local businesses, government agencies, or individuals in your community that may have knowledge pertaining to the subject of your research paper.
Begin reading everything and bookmark, copy, print, and take notes on relevant information. Do not forget to write down bibliographical information so you can site your information sources in your paper.
Now it is time to start putting your paper together. Start by stating your thesis. Make an outline of your paper which will include an introduction, body, and conclusion. Organize your information and mark relevant information that fits together. Write your first draft. Go through and make revisions and corrections. Type your final paper. Before deciding that you are done, go back through your paper and determine if it is the best that you can do. If the answer to that question is “no,” you have some more work to do before you are done!

High school students have to learn to write essays to effectively pass the ACT, SAT, or FCAT exams. There are many resources on the internet to give instruction on accomplishing this as well as giving sample essays. It is advisable to take the time and study these helpful sites to learn more about proper grammar, sentence structures, use of words, etc. for writing an essay. However, listed below you will find a basic overview of essay structure.

There are three parts to an essay; the introduction, supporting paragraphs, and the summary paragraph. The introduction is the first paragraph of your essay and will introduce your main idea. In this paragraph you want to capture the attention of your reader and get them interested while explaining your topic. Consider this paragraph carefully, as the remainder of your essay must relate directly to your introduction. You can use background information such as interesting facts, definitions that you will explain later in your essay, or even quotes.

The next section of your essay will include your supporting paragraphs. This will make up the body of your essay and will include all of the information that develops and supports the main idea of your essay. Begin by listing the main ideas of your essay. Each idea should be placed in its own paragraph. Develop each idea with details, facts, and/or examples. Use transition words to link your paragraphs together at the beginning and end of your paragraphs. Some examples of transition words could be “however,” “nevertheless,” “in addition to,” “therefore,” or “consequently.”

The last section of your essay is going to be your summary paragraph or your conclusion. This paragraph is intended to wrap up your thoughts and ideas presented throughout the essay. You reader should feel that your essay is complete. You will want to restate the strongest points that support your main idea. At the conclusion of your essay you need to restate your main idea but word it differently. Conclude with your personal opinion, suggestions, or plan for action.

The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) is an exam that is given to students in third through eleventh grades in the state of Florida. This test is given to measure standards in reading, math, science, and writing. The writing section of this exam is 45 minutes long and is given to students in fourth grade, eighth grade, and tenth grade. During the 2008 to 2009 school year there were many changes made in the format of this section of the FCAT exam. In fact, there have been several changes made in this portion of the exam over the years. There will be changes made again during the 2012 to 2013 school year.

Originally students were asked to write responses to assigned topics. Eventually an additional multiple choice section was added to the exam and it was renamed FCAT Writing Plus. Then, in 2008 the test was scaled back to being only one section again which was the essay portion, and it was given back its original name, FCAT Writing. Although the multiple choice section was removed in 2008, there are plans for it to be reinstated during the 2012 to 2013 school year.

Because the FCAT Writing exam is an essay style exam, there are several websites that one can visit to learn more about writing essays to prepare for this exam. Explore the internet and find resources that can help you to learn more about proper writing techniques for essays. Learning more about sentence structure, paragraph structure, writing techniques, and the use of more descriptive interesting words in your writing that will help you to improve your writing and ultimately improve your score on the exam.

Tenth graders must pass this exam as a graduation requirement. If they do not pass on the first try they will be required to retake the exam before the end of their twelfth grade year and pass to earn a high school diploma.

Besides the SAT another standardized college entrance exam is the ACT. Students all around the United States take the ACT every year in preparation for future college entrance. There is an optional writing section in the ACT which is offered at an additional cost and is separate from the main test and is not offered during every test date. Many colleges require that the writing test be included. On the official website for the ACT exam there is a link which allows you to determine if the college or colleges you are planning to attend require the writing portion of the exam.

When preparing to take the ACT exam there are many resources available to assist you. The official ACT website offers sample essays and pointers to prepare students adequately. Reading through the website and working through many of the samples and practice tests will help students understand the expectations for the exam and be better prepared.

For those students choosing to take the writing portion of the ACT exam, it is administered at the end of the exam and is 30 minutes long. All essays will be a response to a prompt given. Generally the prompt will pertain to a social issue that is applicable to high school students. Because this portion of the test is optional the score received on the writing section does not affect the overall composite score of the ACT exam. The scores given for the writing section are given as a separate score.

The scoring on the ACT exam is done the same as for the SAT exam. There are two trained readers assigned to score each essay. A score of one through six is given dependent on several factors. A score of zero is given for any essay that is left blank, off topic, non-English, or written in a pencil other than a number two pencil. If the two readers’ scores are off by more than one point a senior third reader is brought in to determine the final score.

High school students all over the United States take the SAT exam, which is a standardized test administered for college entrance in the United States. The SAT takes three hours and forty-five minutes to complete and includes mathematics, critical reading, and writing.

The area that most students may feel unprepared for or worried about tends to be the writing section of the test. The writing section of the SAT includes multiple choice questions and a short essay section. The essay section of the SAT was added into this test in March 2005 due to complaints from colleges of a lack of examples of student’s writing and critical thinking skills.

The writing portion of the SAT exam is always administered as the first part of the exam and is 25 minutes long. For the essay portion students are given a broad prompt and asked to write their essay from this. For example, they may be asked to give an opinion on a specific subject. This section is designed to be accessible to all students no matter what their educational or social background.

Although there is no real essay structure required, essays are scored on a number of factors. There are two trained essay readers assigned to score each essay. The score is given from 1 to 6 with a score of 0 given to essays that are left blank. Some of the criteria that the readers may mark points off on the SAT essay section would be for writing that is illegible, off topic, non-English, or not written with a number two pencil.

For the remainder of the writing section of the SAT exam students will be answering multiple choice questions. The total scores for the writing section will be based off of grammar, use, and diction as well as the answers to the multiple choice questions. The total time of the entire writing section is 60 minutes. Understanding proper grammar, sentence structure, and writing techniques will be an important factor in scoring well.

From March 2009, it will no longer be necessary for students sitting the SAT exams to allow selected colleges to see test results. What is more, students can actually select which, if any, test results to forward to the college. This replaces the system that had been in place from 2002 to 2009, which had required all SAT results to get forward to the student’s chosen colleges.

Some colleges have objected to the changes, saying that it is unfair for students to choose only their best scores to send to admissions offices. As a result, many colleges are adamant they will not be accepting scores that are diluted to only show the highest test scores. They want to see all the scores; applications that have SAT results filtered through Score.

Score Choice works by allowing students to take the SAT test, and then block lower scores from being release to colleges. The college will only see the highest scores achieved and selected by the student, and will have no idea of the lower marks awarded in other subjects. This way, students can actually use the first round of SAT’s as a trial test for their weaker subjects, then re-sit the SAT exam in those subjects and submit the second score.

Students counter the colleges’ arguments by declaring that they are under enough stress when taking SAT or ACT college entrance exams, without the added pressure of having to submit scores in their weaker subjects. Therefore, a poor result caused by stressful conditions may give a false or misleading reflection of the student’s ability.

Colleges counter by saying they have incredible volumes of paperwork to get through as application deadlines draw near. Having all test results to hand, first time around, makes their selection process much easier. If a student takes the SAT test three times, for example, the admissions office will select the top scores from all three tests.

Both Sat and ACT are standardized tests that universities accept for admission. Both has its advantages and disadvantages, but it depends on the on the strength and weakness of an individual.
Students generally score higher when they take the exam that is best suited to them. This makes it easier for them to gain admission to colleges.
Generally, ACT tests a student of the subject matters that studied in high school, whereas SAT tests a student’s thinking skills. ACT may suit those students who received good grades in classes.
On the other hand, SAT is suited to those students who have strong deduction skills. It is more like an aptitude test. It uses tricky confusing phrases intentionally to confuse the students. But some students like SAT more than ACT.
ACT gives more importance to grammar, has covers test on Science reasoning, whereas SAT emphasizes on the use of vocabulary, and has no tests based on science reasoning.
Three sections are included in SAT, that is, writing, critical reading, mathematics, whereas ACT comprises of four sections. They are reading, science, mathematics and English.
In SAT, students are required to give answers to mathematical question, whereas ACT comprises of multiple-choice questions.
IN SAT, the level of difficulty in questions increases as the test progresses, whereas in ACT, the level of questions remains almost constant.
In spite of having the same time for both the tests, the number of questions differs. SAT comprises of 140 questions, whereas ACT comprises of 215 questions.
In a SAT exam, there is negative marking, whereas in ACT exam, there is no negative marking. Further, the questions of SAT are design in such a way that it can slow down the test taker. Therefore, it is suggests to first answer the questions that are easier and then move on to the harder ones.
Students can earn maximum of 36 points in SAT whereas they can earn maximum 800 points in ACT.

Entrance exams are stepping-stones for a student to enter into a college. Students are required to take SAT or ACT, even after they are accepted by colleges. Practice tests are designed to facilitate students in the preparation of college exams.
SAT and ACT, being the most important college entrance exams have practice examinations such as PLAN and PSAT. These tests are designed for students to help students during their sophomore years.
PLAN assists a student to take the ACT exam with ease. It normally consists of four parts
Sections in PLAN
Reading
English
Science
Arithmetic
Other sections contain Educational Opportunity Service, UNIACT interest inventory, perceived needs assessment and high school course and grade details.
The College Board administers the test known as PSAT/ NMSQT that is considered to be the official test for SAT I or SAT reasoning test. The various topics covered under this are writing, problem solving in math and critical reading.
Students who get high scores are given entry for the National Merit Scholar Program. Merit based scholarships are also offered which can be used during admission at a reputed university or college.
Either students are allowed to take SAT or ACT, out of which most of them appears for the test various times. All colleges, universities, and America accept ACT.
Since ACT focuses on four main areas that include reading, English, Mathematics and Science, most of the students feel at ease to write this exam. On the other hand, apart from writing exam, SAT deals with verbal as well as mathematical reasoning skills. This normally makes some students nervous.
In order to evaluate a student’s academic skills more effectively, certain colleges require the applicants to take both SAT and ACT.
The College Board sends all the tests results right from the beginning for those students who re take the SAT test multiple times. On the other hand, ACT sends only the latest test scores to colleges and universities.

Observations show that few students coming from rich families are applying for accommodations on the SAT even though they have no disability. Thus, the SAT is refusing requests made by deserving students who are disabled.
Joan Ryan is the writer for SFGate.com in” Learning Disabled Left Behind. She talks about unfairness in the SAT involving the learning disabled. Professionals working with the College Board note increased claims denied in the last two years as compared to the last ten years. This begs to ask the question why so.
The SAT wants all tests in a uniform manner, arguing that honesty of the tests will compromise if not all the students sit for it at the same time. The SAT too fails to take adequate measures to deal with students found cheating.
As per the SAT accommodations has increased three times in the last 30 years. Of the 20 % population, 2% of students have had their tests adjusted to fit in with their diagnosis. Ten percent however has a formal learning disability. The remaining 8 % of students is assumed are not taking the SAT, do not apply for the accommodations or are just being refused the chance to apply.
The SAT requires proof of the disability that understands. However, it is hard to get an official diagnosis if you come from a family that does not have good insurance. Frequently, students have changes made for them while in high school but lack records. Thus, SAT refuses such requests, as there was no “proof” showing the students were in need of these changes in order to do well. All changes should be in writing on either a 504 Plan or an IEP.
Due to doubts revolving around these tests, many colleges are warming up to the idea of not making the SAT and ACT mandatory for college admissions.

Communication is a very important part of any individual in life. To communicate orally or in writing we need to have a strong base of the language or vocabulary. Reading is a very effective and useful way one can improve his or her vocabulary. If vocabulary is good, then a person is better equipped in understanding and comprehending what words mean. This is very useful to everybody more so in case of students who are studying for the SAT
A student often tries to improve test scores by many ways whilst he is studying for Critical Reading Skills of the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Novels targeted towards high-school students, helps the student to familiarize with new vocabulary words in an interesting and entertaining form. SAT words are in most of these novels are in bold print with their definitions at the bottom of the page.
SAT novels help to hold the student’s interest and attention, without boring them, which may not be the case when using flipping flashcards or memorizing lists of words, students won’t find SAT novels as boring vocabulary builders. SAT novels are intelligently published with currently common and popular topics, such as; dating, sports, summer jobs, driving and high school life, which holds their attention.
Some of the popular novels for the SAT are Head Over Heels, which is a concerns a girl falling for her tutor, who is another high school student. Novels like these hold the attention of teenage girls.
Reading any of these SAT novels is worthwhile with respect to time and the effort in improving and strengthening his vocabulary. These books also provide an interesting and different way of using new vocabulary unlike repetitive and memorization practice tests, besides being educative, yet light reading, proving these novels to being a tool in a perceptive student’s repertoire.

Hundreds of test preparations are available when it comes to SAT exams. Many of these books mainly focus on questions. They give thousands of questions to solve so that you become comfortable for taking the test. By practicing questions, you learn to recognize question patterns that are essential for improvement of your scores in the SAT exam. While these preparations can make you sorted to the questions, but they do not introduce you to the new vocabulary that is required for SAT exams.
Listed below are some tips that can help you improve your vocabulary and improve your SAT scores.

Read a variety of materials. It is not necessary to buy everything in order to read. Read any stuff even though you may find it uninteresting. Try to build your interest in reading out all sorts of materials.
Apart from your preparation books, read newspapers and magazines every day. If you prepare yourself every day a little, then your long hard work will surely focus on your results.
Look out for similar words. Even though some test preparations teaches you the meanings of the words deeply, but recognizing similar words can do.
Look for unfamiliar words in the dictionary. It may not be possible to remember all the unfamiliar words, so you can write them out and their meanings into your copy or computer.
You need to go through few practice tests. The website of SAT provides you one question per day. You may look through the questions provided by their website.

The basic thing is that spending hours for preparation of SAT exam is not at all necessary. You just have to follow a routine for preparation of the exam. The best section of the exam is the reading part as it is easy to prepare that part which consists of vocabulary and basic grammar.

Vocabulary learning has taken a u-turn, for those who like Stephanie Meyer’s twilight Saga. Learners can now sit down to read all the four series, Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn and jot down the words they are not familiar with and later look them up in the dictionary. Through this, one gets to learn of great and new vocabularies, especially in times of exams.
Brian Leaf is defining Twilight: Vocabulary workbook for unlocking the SAT, ACT, GED, and SSAT makes the learning process quick for those interested in Twilight and boosts skills in exams taking. This guide has Twilights, page references, definitions, quizzes and standardized drills, synonyms, mnemonic devices and Latin root words.
In the case of Defining New Moon: Vocabulary Workbook for Unlocking the unfamiliar context, Leaf came up with a similar format as the one he had for Defining Twilight. Defining New Moon workbook is available in book stores that offer test prep materials.
Defining Eclipse may publish and release to the public in May 2010. Students do not have to wait this long. They can do it by themselves and studying for exams, learning vocabulary, and reading favorite novels is not just a tedious job, but exciting.
After reading those workbooks, read Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. Read as you write down the unfamiliar words, page numbers, and all the others properties that the above workbooks have. By following that, you will be creating a wonderful encounter in your readings.
Reading favorite novels Increases vocabulary
When reading unfamiliar words, other contents help in recalling the meaning.
Studying for exams should not be a hard task, find ways to make it exciting and your grades will go up. Making work and study more interesting will keep you motivated to continue going and learning new words that will help improve your scores.

Getting a college degree is everyone’s utmost priority. However, to be able to achieve this, students have to pass the SAT college entrance exams. The results of this exam determine the student’s eligibility for possible scholarships or admission into particular universities. That is why preparatory measures for SAT are crucial. No, wonder why parents willingly pay for costly online SAT prep programs. However, what about for those who cannot afford it? They can set aside their worries now because there are sites that offer free online prep programs. Free online prep sites been discussed as follows.

The College Board that administers the SAT college entrance exams, has generated their own preparatory site to create SAT readiness for incoming college students. The College Board Online Prep Site has several functions to help students register for SAT, check results and even email it to their chosen schools. Moreover, this site provides various learning activities that could improve students- chances of delivering excellent scores. A section of the site called “practice”, presents tutorials with sample questions, quizzes and tips to refresh students- memories and help them find areas where they need to progress on. In addition, loads of sample tests are present, even via e-mail, if requested by the student, to maintain their focus and retain as much information as they could.

Another free site that students can turn to is the Number 2 Free Online Prep. This site offers a different approach in preparing students for SAT. They locate students’ weak points; they focus on it by giving them continuous activities, provide coaching points and monitor their progression until students finally improve on that particular skill.
Finally, Peterson’s Student Edge site offers a free SAT Prep program by giving you three sample exams. You can also enrich your vocabulary words by opting for the email service.
It is good to have such alliances to help everyone carry out their dreams without asking for anything back.

Providing reading instructions to a student at an early stage is the first and foremost step that need taken during the process of SAT preparation. Exposure to challenges such as comprehension reading and vocabulary building through a wide range of books over a period makes the child an efficient reader.
There are numerous books available on SAT preparation but it’s imperative to purchase the right one. One should look for sections that cover detailed explanations, practice tests etc. The book should also have a separate section containing references to reviews on arithmetic skills, vocabulary and grammar. To make learning more interesting and based on the study method followed by the student, CDs can be utilized. Although, these kinds of materials are useful, it is recommended to buy a book, as the questions for practice tests keep changing pretty often.
It is imperative to keep an eye on the registration cut-off date and test taking dates. Either get in touch with the management cell at school or check online at College Board page. A study plan can be prepared based on the available time.
In case you have one whole year to prepare for the SAT exam, four or five practice tests can be taken. Concentrate more on question types and reference sections. During free time, you can refer to additional SAT preparation books.
Adopt a more targeted approach if you have very few months left for your exam. Take two or three practice tests. Review only those questions that you have answered incorrectly. Concentrate more on vocabulary section, so that it will be helpful for you to identify unfamiliar vocabulary words when you sit for the final exam. A practical guide such as Writer’s Inc comes handy.
Just one month before the final exam, concentrate on one practice test, question types and vocabulary section. Maintaining a positive attitude boosts up your confidence level to write the final exam.

ACT is a test that that is three hours long and consists of four sections. They are Math, English skills, science and reading. There is also a thirty-minute writing test for students to write essays on specific topics. However, this is optional. The students mostly take this test when they reach the tenth or eleventh grade. They can take this test as many times, as they wish and while joining the university, they can send their best scores. From the ninth grade, the teachers should help the students to understand the pattern of ACT exams.

Most colleges, than the SAT scores prefer ACT score. For instance, if a student does well in the science section, then he is considered have an inclination towards science. Each section consists of twenty-five percent marks.

However, it is not essential to take the thirty-minute optional test, but many colleges prefer to see this score. Even if writing is not your strength, but you should opt for this section as it can give you a high essay score.

Preparing for ACT exam should start early during the high school. One night per week can allotted for preparation of ACT exam. In this time, students can take up reading passages that are challenging and make deductions and inferences from them.

Teachers must prepare the students to reduce the test anxiety and focus on their goals. Students need to learn how to keep fit both physically and mentally. They should keep a positive attitude and take up the exam as a challenge.

After thoroughly understanding the pattern of the ACT exam, students should go for content studying. Teachers can help students improve their preparation by introducing them to mock tests for ACT and other standardized tests. Instead of making the students view this as a challenge, teachers should guide them specifically towards the test.

It is difficult for most of the students to get a decent score on SAT or ACT. A student’s entry into a reputed college is determined based on these tests. Most of the colleges take into consideration at least one test for admission.
Practicing the tests, make the students familiar with the question paper format and essentials that ultimately brings better SAT or ACT scores. Being dedicated and spending reasonable amount of study time is essential.
Hiring a private instructor who is familiar with the standard SAT or ACT tests is capable of teaching a student, based on his strengths and weaknesses in regards to the tests.
Interviewing few instructors and evaluating their qualification helps parents to select the right one. For numerous ideas on hiring, refer to the website- Lucky Tutors. Ensure that your child participates in the hiring process, to determine whether he is compatible with the tutor.
One way to locate the potential tutors is to get in touch with the local high schools. Contact learning centers that specialize in various academic fields. Few websites even offer online tutoring via chat or video conference.
In preparation classes, courses are in design for a group of 15 students or more. It’s difficult for the tutors to pay individual attention. The classes are divided based on the topics that need to be covered. Since companies offer these courses, the price ranges from $30-$750.
Unlike test preparation courses, College Board offers free practice tests. Guides with past test questions serve as an additional reference.
PSAT is a test conducted for eleventh graders, offering feedback in various sections, whereas PLAN meant for tenth graders, except for a minor difference in PLAN focusing on ACT. Getting a grasp of the basic elements increases the confidence level of a student. The best test preparation method can be selected based on the learning style.

Teachers always teach to take the test. Whether or not they realized it, but this is a fact. Students understands the teacher and determines their grade based on the teacher’s wishes.
Now day’s teacher use technology to generate tests. These tests may appear to be professional with tables, graphics and charts. Teachers spent much time to prepare students for standardized tests, but often they are useless. Spending most of the time cramming, contents into the brains of the student is useless. For taking standardized test student needs preparation and practice. They must know to interpret and formulate answers.
Improving standardized test scores is easy. Problem solving skills can help students attempt variety of questions. Listed below are some suggestions that may be helpful.
Bloom’s Taxonomy can give students important phrases, test words, and their meanings.
Purchased textbooks and practice sets are not at all time effectives.
Teacher should be well acquainted with the content and the concepts that appear s on standardized texts.
Take sample test items by visiting different websites. Make yourself familiar with test formats and then make student familiar with them.
Make students test throughout the year. Cramming at the end of the year may result in reduction of scores.
Make student familiar in identifying key words in a question. Increase the vocabulary of students.
Make sure for science test; students follow the scientific method of investigation and their steps appropriately.

Preparation for standardized test can take about a year. Instead of only talking about standardized test, you should take the necessary steps. Only talking about it can increase stress.

Teachers may achieve some book for taking some standardized test by talking to the principal. Just follow the necessary steps given above from the very first day. The basic thing that should be kept in mind is to improve teachers’ assessment and problem solving skills of the students.

If you have applied for College Board SAT I: Reasoning Test and you have few weeks left, then what should you do?
Ensure that you take all the free practice tests that are posted on the College Board website. Pay attention to the solutions given and find out if the strategies can put into practice to similar problems.
Make use of the free SAT practice questions given by your guidance counselor. After this, take the free practice tests offered in the various sections
The free online practice test sections can be found on College Board and few local libraries.
Ensure that you write the SAT practice sections, just the way you would take an official SAT.
The questions under each section can be finished within the prescribed time by using a stop clock or timer.
Make sure you complete the entire test at a single stretch
Do not refer to any books or guides
Upon completion of all the sections, make sure you review your answers.
Once you have completed the practice tests successfully, the next step is to take a full-length practice SAT
Since past question from old SAT exams are included in the College Board practice tests, these can be given first priority. Free practice test on other websites can also be taken.
Do not go back to previous sections once you complete them
Do not spend more time on the last section
Complete the test at a single shot and make sure to use No.2 pencils
For arithmetic sections, a graphing calculator may be used
Do not forget to check your answers. Self evaluate the answers and mark scores for the right answers. Based on the scores, you can buy a SAT preparation book that meets your goal.
Once you complete the practice SAT questions, test sections and full length practice SAT, it is important that you continue preparing for the final exam.

Any sophomore student’s nightmare is attending a class where an essay needs to be written. Students who do not have past experience in essay writing fear when they hear the word “blue examination book”. Unlike the tests, such as SAT, ACT or PSAT where students need to answer standard multiple-choice questions, essay writing is entirely a different challenge. Proper preparation can eliminate anxiety from a student’s mind.
Not every test that a student comes across in a college or university test need be an essay in particular. Some courses may base on bubble sheet testing.
Essay tests are entirely different. A good essay has questions where students are asked to give detailed explanation of a particular concept, citing proper illustrations or examples.
There is no standard formula that each and every student can adopt. The learning methodology varies from person to person. Students, flash cards prove easier to learn. It is believed that students who have develop the habit of making note of important points tend to remember more details than those who do not.
Students, who usually highlight certain important points with various colors to differentiate the purpose of doing it, often find it difficult to recall when they refer the same points again. Very few students spend time in researching for valuable information online. There are websites where students can participate in quizzes and practice tests.
Preparing for an essay is more difficult than preparing for a multiple choice based test. The students need to master the various facts that are related to a particular concept.
Certain essay questions are divided into more than one section. It is imperative for students to understand what exactly the question is before they attempt to answer it. An essay should have proper explanation with relevant examples, ending with a brief conclusion.

In the English language, noun phrases and nouns are considered as important parts in a sentence. There are four forms that ESL students and native speakers need to know. To write and speak English correctly, students are required to master the four forms that work as the main subject and they are as follows

Noun phrases
Verb phrases
Prepositional phrases

Noun clauses
Noun Clauses
Preceded by subordinating conjunction, noun clauses can be defined as subordinate classes, containing a clause. A clause normally contains a subject and a predicate. The functions of noun clauses are similar to those of noun phrases. Few examples are
What the maid said confused me
What you previously assumed about Noun clauses was incorrect
Noun Phrases
A noun phrase is considered as a grammatical form capable of functioning as grammatical in a subject. These kinds of phrases normally comprise of a noun or a pronoun, with modifiers that include adverbs, nouns, adjectives, prepositional phrases and so on. The noun phrase is considered as a grammatical form of subject that is used quite often.
Dogs primarily like bones
My dog also likes to eat homemade food
Verb Phrases
Another grammatical form is the verb phrase. It performs the subject function in the form of infinitives and present participles. Verb phrases contain a verb and in addition, any form of complements, modifiers, infinitive markers, particles etc. For instance, see the below examples

Drinking fresh juice is healthy

Writing is fun

Prepositional phrases
Some phrases that contain preposition are followed by prepositional complements, like a noun phrase. These kinds of phrases generally refer to locations.
Behind the garage is a dog kennel
After seven is the best time to meet the doctor

Knowing these basics about grammar can dramatically improve the scores of the SAT and help the student get into a good college.

The student who takes the SAT exam can concentrate more on the vocabulary part. Answering all the questions in the Critical Reading Skills section increases the chance of the student being admitted into a reputed university.
Memorizing the most commonly used words in the last minute will not be fruitful and they can be forgotten easily. Those students who prepare well in advance can divide the word list into groups that can be dealt on a weekly basis. Within a span of ten weeks, the students can memorize up to 2000 new words. Setting this kind of a goal can bring better results.
Online websites offer free vocabulary lists that can be printed. For instance, the vocabulary builder site has numerous word lists that are helpful for students. For an easier understanding, videos on You Tube can be watched. Visual materials have a greater impact on the mind.
After gaining enough confidence by memorizing numerous words, students can start taking practice tests. Materials such as online websites, books and guides have practice tests.
The missed words can be written on sheet of paper and the students can concentrate more on those words. Not all students are capable of memorizing all the words and the learning methodology differs from one person to another. If a student has difficult in learning few words, an alternate method of leaning should be adopted.
An interesting and fun way to learn different words is by playing online games such as Scrabble and Boggle on the internet. Websites such as Free Rice offers donations to the United Nations World Food Program, every time a student gives correct answers.
Rather than spending more time on text, words can be memorized in a fun way by playing. Thus, the Critical Reading Skills section becomes easy and the scores will be better.

SAT is considered as an essential evaluation yardstick during the admission process. Colleges all over the world take into consideration the applicant’s SAT scores as part of the admission. Hence, it is important for students to take the exam seriously by following the numerous tips provided in SAT guides.
If budget is a major constraint, students can get hold of a free SAT study guide on websites. It’s imperative that you find a guide that is updated with as much information as possible. It should cover all the topics in the test. Students should spend ample time going through the material, so that they do not study in the last minute, just one week before the final exam.
Since the College Board conducts SAT, it is the apt place where students can get a SAT study guide. An online order can be placed for the guide, which costs less than $25. Practice tests can be taken by the students in order to find out how much they score.
Students can make the best use of the free SAT preparation classes offered by certain schools. Proper guidance and free help can be received from experienced tutors.
If a student has very few choices for getting admission, it is imperative to check the minimum SAT scores required to be admit into a certain college or university. This way, the student can get motivated to study, as he knows how much he needs to score. Students can determine how much more preparation is left after comparing the test scores to the requirements of the college. This gives an idea on the level of effort that needs to be put in studying before appearing for the final exam.
Making the best use of the free SAT guides can help a student to perform well in the final exam. Rather than getting tensed and worrying about college admission, students should spend reasonable and dedicated time on practicing the tests.

No matter if you want to become a computer engineer or design jewelry like you find at JR Dunn, getting an education is key. And getting into a good institution will require that you do well on your admission tests

Students being admit or rejected into a reputed college or university depends upon the SAT scores. Even though SAT appears to be a nightmare as it is the main yardstick that determines the future of a student, it is also the easiest piece of information to improve on.
A company whose focus is on making money adopts smart test strategies in teaching students how to get best scores in SAT. The targeted students are those who have not done well in their PSAT test. Students who undergo the preparation courses conducted by companies can score well in the SAT.
For students whose main barrier is budget, a SAT preparation book comes handy and being committed during self-study time can bring improved results. Courses are not needed for students who are self-disciplined and study the preparation book on a weekly basis.
Two months of dedicated preparation, either ways can bring better results and the chances of entering a reputed dream college or university can increase.
For students who score well, whatever they learn in a SAT course is merely revision. High score achievers should practice more and more in order to get the best possible result. The official SAT study guide is the one that high score achievers should lay their hands on.
Students who aim at achieving high scores need to take practice SAT tests without any time limits. If the student is not sure about the answer for a particular question, then it needs to be review. All the practice tests need to be taking again, until the student has covered all the real SAT questions. For students who can hire private tutor, it is easy to get a better grasp of questions that could not be resolved earlier.
Continuous practice is meant not only for high achievers but also for those students who are just average or above average score achievers.

Good writing is a sign of great career development. Communicating effectively can help you succeed to great heights in your career. To enhance the writing skill, it’s possible for you to get trained in areas such as arts, education, business, communication etc. Developing writing skills can open the doors to a new and better career which includes journalism, public relations, marketing, business & creative writing and many more.
If the following tips are taken into consideration then you can easily develop your writing skill
First and foremost, it’s imperative to keep your focus intact on what exactly you want to convey in writing. Having a clear idea let’s you write and present information clearly to the reader. Hence, whatever you write can be kept simple and to the point.
Organizing what you write is as essential factor. The writing should flow in naturally with logical sentences and paragraphs. Including complicated grammatical words and beating around the bush needs to be avoided. The content should be written based on a single idea that can grab the attention of the reader.
Voicing out what you want the reader to know can be done through a unique writing skill. This can be done in business as well as creative writing. This way, you express your personality in a simple yet unique style.
Using word dictionary helps in selecting proper and suitable words that can be included in your writing. It’s imperative that you convey the message in a natural way rather than making it look artificial. Another important point to be noted is that usage of too many words can destroy the writing.
It’s important that you start with proper opening sentences and maintain the flow in a natural way. Close the text with proper conclusion.
The last but one of the main tasks that you need to do is proofread your work.

By Laura B. Hoffman

Robert Cormier is a former journalist and the author of several bestselling novels for young adults. His books repeatedly appear on the Best Books for Young Adults lists of the American Library Association, The New York Times and School Library Journal. He has won the Margaret A. Edwards Award for The Chocolate War, I Am the Cheese and After the First Death. His most recent novel In the Middle of the Night was nominated for an Edgar award.

Q: Why do you choose to write young adult novels_
A: I don’t think of them that way. When I write I write to the fullest of my ability and I usually have an interesting and intelligent person in mind with whom I can be subtle. That person often turns out to be 14 years old, but that reader can also be 45.

Q: Do you receive a lot of feedback from your readers_
A: Yes, I get lots of calls. My telephone number is Amy Hertz’s number in I am the Cheese. Word spreads around so kids call. Just today, I received a call from a class in Colorado Springs that was studying the book. Often I get calls from individual kids who just want to keep in touch. They are very inventive. They ask for Amy and create all kinds of scenarios saying Adam is calling. The letters and phone calls I get confirm what I am doing, and since writing is so solitary, it is good to get that confirmation.

Q: Your books are often considered dark. Why do you choose to write about the dark side of life_
A: I think they are probably shadowed but not completely dark. On the surface they may look dark, but a closer reading reveals moral values. I am fortunate that teachers teach the books, because more than a casual reading will reveal those things. However, I must contradict myself and say I’m not in the business of creating role models or sending out lessons. I am a storyteller trying to write believable stories with believable characters. For instance, in The Chocolate War, the main character Jerry gets defeated because nobody comes to his rescue. The implicit lesson is that bad things happen when good people don’t do anything. All the books tend to have these values if people care to look.

Q: Which one of your characters is most like you_
A: Adam, in I am the Cheese, is a pretty good portrait of me as a kid. It shows what a wreck I was. I actually began the book as an exercise experimenting with first person present tense but then I became very emotionally involved because I realized I was writing about myself. Like Adam, I had a paper route and I was chased by thousands of dogs. I was intimidated by bullies and I was scared of my own shadow. It became very personal.

Q: What about the other characters you have created, do they reflect different htmlects of your personality_
A: I guess there are pieces of me in all the books. When The Chocolate War was first accepted for publication, I went down to an editing meeting in New York and met a young editor who looked at me and said, “if I ever met Archie Costello I think I’d thrash him.” I thought that word was so terrific, I always remembered it. Well, I thought to myself, you’re looking at him because I thought up all those terrible things that Archie Costello did. At that I moment in time, when I was writing at the typewriter, I was Archie Costello. I devised all the assignments, I spoke through his voice and saw
the world through his eyes. I think all writers have bits and pieces of themselves in all their characters, although you identify more with some than others.

Q: How do you begin a novel_
A: I usually start with an emotion, something that happens that really affects me. Then I devise a character because I think that characters are the keys to the books, they are the beginning point. The reader must be able to picture the characters. Then there is a natural progression of having them overcome conflicts and reach goals.

Q: Do you know what is going to happen to them when you begin the story_
A: I never outline but I do have a sense of where it is going. I like the excitement of sort of, winging it. When I started The Chocolate War I knew that Jerry would end up not selling the chocolates. I felt I needed to have someone opposing him and that forced me to create the Vigils. You just keep answering that great question, ‘what if_’ What if there is a faculty member opposing him_ So I created Brother Leon and then, how were they opposing him_

That is the joy of writing, to find out what is going to happen. You create these characters and they start colliding with each other, that’s the thrill and the excitement of it all.

Q: The main characters in In The Middle of the Night, The Chocolate War, and I am the Cheese are all loners. Why are you so interested in the loner_
A: As an adolescent I always felt like an outsider and I think a lot of kids feel that way. They want so much to belong to the group but there is something shouting in each of them that they are really alone. I have always had a sense that we are all pretty much alone in life, particularly in adolescence.

Q: Do you have any final thoughts to share with our readers about the profession of being a writer_
A: Writing is, as a chosen profession, filled with frustrations and rejection so you have to have the love of words and writing and expression and then everything else follows. But the love has to be there in the first place. Despite all those frustrations, the rewards of writing are endless. When you complete the book, when you see your words on the page, when you see it in a bookstore or library, when somebody reads it and writes you a letter. These fantastic rewards make it worth the long solitary hours at the computer or typewriter. Being a writer is filled with all sorts of perils, but if you have the love of writing the rewards are terrific and it is all worth it in the end.

An Interview with novelist L.J. Smith

L.J. Smith is the author of nine bestselling novels for children and teenagers, including the two series The Vampire Diaries and The Secret Circle. The first volume of her latest series The Forbidden Game, is in bookstores now.

Q: Why did you decide to write novels for young adults_
A: I decided to write for kids when I was a kid. I knew the kind of books I liked to read and there just weren’t enough of them. Nothing to do but write them myself. I’d been telling myself stories ever since I was four or five, and writing them down was just the next step. I suppose the real question is: Why am I still writing YA books, since I haven’t been a young adult for…ahem!…well, quite a few years.
Could be arrested development. I must admit that I still read classic children’s books, and get a lot of pleasure out of it. Books about fantasy, magic, and the supernatural just excite me, and I love to read them and write them. I’d like to write books for adults someday, but I hope I never grow up completely!

Q: How did you get your first book published_
A: I finished The Night of the Solstice the year I got out of college. I’d been working on the book since I got the idea for it in high school, but the writing went slowly because I was busy studying psychology. Besides, everybody told me that I could never make a living being a writer, so there was no hurry!

I took my book to a professional typist (I didn’t even have a typewriter in those days, much less a computer) and she got very excited about it. She said it was the best manuscript she’d seen, and she had a friend who was a literary agent, and asked if I was I interested in being agented.

I was. Very. Of course, it still took some time to get the book sold — for one thing, I had to cut it by a hundred pages! But eventually Macmillan bought it, and my fate was decided. I loved writing and I knew I had to keep doing it.

Q: What is your educational and professional background_
A: I got my BA in Experimental Psychology from the University of California at Santa Barbara (great school! great beaches!) I have two teaching credentials from San Francisco State University, one in elementary education and one in Special Ed. I’ve taught kindergarten and special education, and enjoyed both — but now I’m writing full time. Every fall I get very nostalgic about teaching, but writing is more fun — and it pays better.

Q: Who are some of your favorite writers_
A: This is a tough one. There are so many, but I really tend to like the classics. I adore Dickens’ characters and his playful, whimsical prose. I love Jane Austen’s gentle satire, and Mark Twain’s dry wit. I read Steinbeck, Alice Walker and Toni Morrison when I want to cry. For sheer escapism I like fantasy or science fiction — Tolkien and C.S. Lewis and H.G. Wells. Or detective stories, like Dorothy Sayers’ Lord Peter Whimsey series. And — please don’t laugh — when I’m sad, I cuddle up in front of the fire with L. Frank Baum’s Oz books or Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House on the Prairie books. They always make me feel better.

Q: What advice would you give a teenager who wants to be an author_
A: WRITE! Write, write, write. And read, read, read. Those are the two most important things you can do.

Write all the time — write in a journal, scribble down ideas on napkins at McDonald’s, spend a boring class scrawling poetry in your notebook (Okay, maybe that last isn’t the best advice, but I admit it worked for me.) Write anything and everything you like, and don’t be critical of yourself. Just let it come out and worry about whether it’s good later.

Write when you’re feeling something; when you’re mad, or in love, or in pain. The passion will come through. And write about what you know, write about your own school, your friends, your take on the world. Teens often think their own lives are boring — they want to write about exotic places, weird people, things out of their experience. But it’s best, especially at first, to write what you know. It may be hard to expose your most private self to other people, but that’s what writing is about. And the ring of truth is unmistakable.
Reading is the other important thing. Read all you can and read a variety of books. You’ll absorb all sorts of good things, grammar, vocabulary, plot structure — even if you don’t realize it. Try the classics, and keep trying them as you get older. Some things that you think are really boring and stupid right now will suddenly become interesting as you mature. A little light goes on in your head and you say, “Oh, so that’s why everybody likes Chaucer, wow.”

Q: Is there anything else you think will interest teenage writers_
A: I’ve babbled on long enough. But I think it’s great that Writes of Passage is giving kids a forum for their work. This kind of encouragement is just what teenagers need. Good luck!
